Tayla Wood

Easy Riders has had numerous successes however one of the stand out stories is that of Tayla. Variety donated a ‘Storm' power wheelchair to Tayla having received an appeal from her mother. The chair was given so that Tayla could participate properly in her beloved power chair football. Since receiving the chair Tayla has progressed at astonishing speed and has been picked to compete in the National football championships. Tayla's mother sent a letter to Variety Club explaining what a difference the chair has made in her daughter's life. (Tayla has a Brother with a similar condition)

"We took delivery of Tayla's new Storm football chair on Friday and I wanted to write and thank you and the committee so much. On the strength of getting the chair, Tayla was picked for the Nationals this weekend and had a fabulous time.

You have no idea how much this chair means to her and we just couldn't have afforded to fund it for her so we are indebted to you for all your help. Having two children in powered wheelchairs (Tayla's brother Jordan is 13) means that the cost of insuring and maintaining all their equipment prohibits us from being able to afford a luxury item like the Storm.

As I mentioned to you before, power chair football has really changed the lives of both my children. Up until now, there wasn't any team sport open to them. They spend their whole lives being dependent on able bodied people for everything. This is something they can do all by themselves and is great fun. My kids have spent their whole lives being told to slow down and be careful. At last they have the freedom to go as fast as they like and play a competitive sport.

There is a great camaraderie in the Aspire Club and they have made so many good friends. They live for their football and this chair has meant that Tayla has got the right equipment to compete safely and on a level playing field with the rest of the team. Being in a situation where everyone is in a power wheelchair and going at top speed was very daunting but exciting for them at first. Up until then they had only every come across one or two other power chairs in the same place. Suddenly, being faced with a room full of chairs whizzing around made them feel that they weren't alone and different from everyone else.
