Variety at Work

Do you remember your first funfair ride? First pantomime? First time you saw the sea? Over the last 40 years, Variety at Work has been responsible for thousands of “firsts” like this. It has been an immense privilege to light up the lives of children who may have very few other chances to discover what fun the world can be, and how many possibilities it offers.

Expanding children’s horizons is a vital part of their education, and we work with teachers and carers to make sure the Variety at Work events emphasise learning through fun. Working in partnership with hundreds of visitor attractions, companies and private supporters, and with the unflagging support of our volunteers, we have helped to organise unforgettable days out for over 600,000 children, throughout the country.

Here’s a taste of the range of events we offer:

  • Weekly educational tours including Tower of London, Museum of Childhood and Duxford Imperial War Museum
  • Armed Forces, Police and Fire Brigade visits including Air Traffic Control, Police Dog Section and Red Arrows displays
  • Pets as Therapy visits
Every Christmas, 2,000 children enjoy a whole day of free festivities at the theme park as guests of our generous sponsors, Crest Nicholson. Many of the youngsters have speech and communication problems, but there’s no mistaking their pure delight as they enjoy the rides, the pantomime, the snow show – and especially their visit to Santa’s grotto, to collect their Christmas gift from the man himself.

“The children still talk about it from last year…it really is a fantastic day out. It’s great for their school work, too, as it gives me lots of material to follow up in lessons afterwards.”

Variety at Work carer

A group of Buckinghamshire children and their carers found that the sky really is the limit with Variety at Work! Staff at Freedom In The Air, a specialist flight school, took the time to introduce children to the workings of the aircraft - and the skills needed to fly them. Then every child got the opportunity to take the controls in the air, and fly a plane over their own village – while their parents looked on from the back seat.
