Poplar Boys & Girls Club
The Variety Club has been involved with the Poplar Boys & Girls Club since the 1950's. Over the years we have provided support by buying equipment, funding trips and a whole host of other activities. In fact in 1965 Variety Club member Bill Butlin, laid the foundation stone for the Poplar Boy's new gym facility, which is still there today.
The Poplar Boys & Girls Club is the essence of what Variety Club believes Youth Clubs should be about. They provide a welcome distraction for children and young people who may well otherwise engage in less wholesome activities. Anyone is able to visit the club throughout the week and socialize with their friends and peers in a safe, structured environment which keeps them off the streets.
The Poplar Club also has a state of the art Boxing Gym facility. It is just another example of the work which Lenny Emms and his team dedicate themselves to. The Boxing Club is hugely successful with one member Billy having just returned from the Beijing Olympics as the first British Boxing judge for 25 years. Other famous alumni of the club include footballers Lee Bowyer and Paul Brush, whilst Boxing Commonwealth Champion Silvestre Mitty also stepped into the ropes at Poplar.
With the ongoing support of the Variety Club and London Youth the Poplar Boys and Girls Club plan to go from strength to strength.
