Charity Golfer Strikes A Par With A Hole In One For Children's Charity

He’s at it again.

Not content with playing the longest UK golf hole from John O’ Groats to Lands End in 2005; or playing golf through the entire 2006 FLORA London Marathon for the Variety Club Children’s Charity; David Sullivan and Jeremy Schwartz, both from Oxted, Surrey, will dress as Batman and Robin whilst carrying Del Boy’s Robin Reliant.

David and Jeremy hope to raise in excess of £5,000 for the Variety Club Children’s Charity whilst paying homage to the classic Only Fools and Horses episode, Heroes and Villains;

David Sullivan said:

“Five years ago I was hospitalized due to a collapsed kidney.  Whilst in hospital, I came across Variety Club and saw how it provides direct support to children and their families; I don’t have a large cheque book, but wanted to help others using my endurance to raise money for the Variety Club.  They can support the children that need it the most.”

Norman Kaphan, Variety Club’s Chief Executive said:

“Every year David continues to amaze us with his fundraising ideas for the Flora London Marathon.  His dedication to helping disadvantaged children and commitment to The Variety Club is a testament to us all and we wish David and Jeremy luck in their training and in their 26mile haul through the streets of London!”

David runs a successful roofing business and teaches disadvantaged children how to play golf in his spare time.

Lady to shave her head to raise funds

Parceline employee Julie Bentley will sacrifice her long locks by having her head shaved to raise money for the Variety Club of Great Britain – but only if £5,000 is pledged for the charity.

£3,000 has been committed so far by colleagues at leading express parcels carrier Parceline, where 45-year-old Julie works as credit manager at the Bristol office.

“I’m hoping we can get some more donations from colleagues and generous readers to take the total to £5,000 – so the headshave can go ahead on December 1,” says Julie.

“It is a dramatic way to raise money – and I mentioned it to colleagues as a joke initially, but if it raises a substantial sum of money it will be worth it. It would be fantastic if people really get behind this – especially as the company will match the sum raised, so we could be handing over a cheque for £10,000.”

Parceline’s 50 depots and 100 depots for sister company Interlink Express have enabled numerous Sunshine Coaches to be donated for special school across the country – from Mossbourne Community Academy in Hackney, to St Bernard School in Lincolnshire, Heathside School in Ipswich to Orchard School in Powys.

Julie follows in a long tradition of employees from Parceline and Interlink Express who over the last 15 years have helped to raise over £800,000 for the Variety Club. The company matches £ for £ all employee fundraising, and the latest campaign, ‘Going for Gold’, sees them aiming to have donated 50 Sunshine Coaches by the end of 2007. With big-hearted employees like Julie helping them on their way, we’re sure they’ll succeed.

To make a donation, send a cheque made payable to “Variety Club Children’s Charity of Great Britain, 93 Bayham Street, London NW1 0AG or to Julie Bentley, Parceline, Trelawney House, Surrey Street, Bristol BS2  8PS, or simply donate online.

Golfing for Charity

Last year, David Sullivan, a 42-year old builder from Oxted, Surry set a world record by hitting a golf ball 1,700 km (1,100 miles) from Land's End to John O'Groats - recording 247,382 shots.

This year, Mr Sullivan hopes to finish the London Marathon taking place on 23 April in 40,000 shots, raising £5,000 for the Variety Club. Mr Sullivan will take a full set of clubs around the course with him, and then auction them to raise more money - runners needn't worry though as rubber balls will be used.
